i watch, therefore i am

So most people know how i can be such a couch potato. It's one of my guilty pleasures, watching TV that is. But because watching shows on local channels are getting to be quite a pain, you don't expect me to be watching something from, say ABC 5, right?

Wrong.

Me and my sister were lucky enough to catch a couple of really good Asian movies since first Saturday of this month. Adding now to the list of asian movies we've watched are: Homerun and I Not Stupid, both of which are Singapore made and directed by Jack Neo.

Both flicks had young actors and actresses as main characters and it could've been Neo's way to make his audience 'listen'. See, being a non-Singaporean viewer, I'd say Homerun was a touching movie mainly because of the brother-sister relationship. But one could very well see (doesn't really have to be a Singapore national to notice) that the dialogues of the characters weren't what young kids their age would normally say and think of. That's when you'll realize that someone's trying to make a (political)statement. If you happen to have a slight background of the political system of Singapore, then most probably you'd understand where the writer is coming from.

On the other hand, I Not Stupid's supposed to be a comedy, a satirical comedy they say. However, me and my siobe agree that there weren't much scenes to be laughed at. This time, Neo's message weren't conveyed in a subtle manner. Then it hits you. Neo's views on Singaporean government and culture could very well be a Filipino's views on Philippine government and culture (i.e. giving importance to English - students had to master English that it doesn't matter if they wouldn't know Chinese anymore, colonial mentality - giving a westerner higher position, ignoring the fact that there are more able and skilled locals who can do the same work, if not better, etc.)

I'm not a certified movie critic and the reviews may say otherwise, but I found both films worth watching.
